18 Year-Old Entrepreneur Raises $1.8 Million in VC Funding

At GROW Conference last week I met a very interesting young entrepreneur. 18 year old Jordan Satok announced last month that he had raised a $1.8 million seed round lead by OMERS Ventures for Toronto-based AppHero.

When Canadian entrepreneur Brian Wong raised $200,000 from True Ventures for Kiip at the ripe age of 19, he was labelled the youngest CEO to raise venture capital. Looks like that title should now belong to Jordan, a fellow Canadian.

AppHero is an intelligent social recommendation platform for mobile apps and version 1.2 of their iPhone and iPad app was just approved by Apple. The newest version has been in the works for two months and includes a refined interface, the ability to invite your friends from Facebook (so you can see the apps they have and recommend apps to them), as well as better privacy controls.

Jordan and his four-person team are really passionate about helping consumers find the very best apps. AppHero, a free app available for iPhone and iPad, focuses on getting you the most relevant apps based on your personal interests and preferences.

AppHero 1.2 also brings a significantly revamped recommendation engine to provide more compelling, personalized apps. AppHero now takes into count more social data and uses existing data about the apps you already have in smarter ways to provide even better recommendations.

Jordan certainly isn't new to the startup world. While he only graduated from high school last January, previous to that he spent two years working on the marketing team at Rypple (which was acquired late last year by Salesforce). At Rypple he worked on a handful of conversion funnel optimization projects - but more importantly, he got a taste of success.

Interesting fact: Jordan also raised an angel round from Golden Venture Partners and others when he was still 17 years young. Since he wasn't old enough to sit on the board or sign anything, his mother had to fill in for him. On his 18th birthday, he asked his mother to resign so he could attend his first board meeting - isn't that what you did on your 18th birthday?
