40% of Canadian Mobile Users Now Own Smartphones; RIM Leads But Apple's Gaining Fast

Over 20 million Canadians own mobile devices, according to comScore's MobiLens report. 8 million, or 40%, of Canadians own a smartphone. This is among the greatest smartphone penetration in the world.

RIM continues to lead smartphone marketshare in Canada, but its crown has eroded further. RIM currently owns 36% of Canada's smartphone market, down from comScore's last report, while Apple owns 30%, up from the last report. Google places third with 25%.

Also included in the data is the difference in usage between regular mobile subscribers and smartphone subscribers. Obviously, smartphone users can access the web, email, and apps unlike feature phone users—but they also text more, something that all "dumb" phones are capable of.
