Toronto's 500px Launches Mobile App for Windows 8 Tablets and Smartphones

500px has launched an app for Windows 8.

The Toronto-based photo-sharing platform works on Microsoft's Surface tablets and Windows-based smartphones.

The Canadian company says expanding its app to the Windows platform was important because it gives photographers access to a larger global audience for their images, which is part of 500px's vision to ensure their work reaches people around the world regardless of device.

“We’ve taken the signature 500px photo-sharing experience that was so popular on other tablets and built that same functionality into the Windows Store app design,” says 500px chief product officer and co-founder Evgeny Tchebotarev.

“Microsoft has made design a priority across its businesses," he added. "That’s why we’re working with them to showcase our photographers on the Bing homepage. Now people can enjoy our photos directly on the new 500px app for Windows 8.”

“500px features an immersive, full-screen experience ideal for viewing beautiful photos from some of the most talented photographers in the world,” noted John Richards, senior director of Windows App Marketing for Microsoft Corp. “This new Windows Store app will give our users access to the rich 500px platform on any Windows 8 device.”

A hub for the world’s best photos
The talented 500px design team used the Windows 8 hub model as inspiration for the responsive app to ensure the design provides an easy to navigate, intuitive experience for anyone familiar with the Surface tablet or any other Windows 8 device.

The 500px app for Windows 8 is available in the Windows Store.

500px was founded in late 2009 by Oleg Gutsol and Evgeny Tchebotarev. Today the site boasts over 2.5 million users and a billion page views each month..
