Berlin-based 9flats has decided to take on rival Airbnb via a North American expansion. First stop: Toronto.
9flats announced this week that it has acquired iStopOver, an online Canadian startup focused on private rentals. The two companies will merge "over the next few weeks" and eventually the two sites will become just one.
While iStopOver will best serve 9flats as a North American foothold and an established Toronto office, the Canadian company has also made inroads in South Africa and Australia, which will vastly expand 9flats' reach outside of its headquarters in Europe.
