A Thinking Ape acquires Good Guy Robots and everyone wins

Vancouver independent games studio Good Guy Robots (GGR) has been acquired by startup darling A Thinking Ape (ATA).

Techvibes has been covering the story of ATA since they returned to Canada and starting making money. ATA operates in the mobile social games space and is currently ranked in the Top 10 Grossing iPhone Apps in the US on the Apple iTunes App Store.

The acquisition of GGR is clearly a talent grab and will see GGR co-founders Ranyl Bantog and Tyler Schroeder join ATA.

GGR was founded less than a year ago and is the studio behind the puzzle game Codex which was recently a finalist in the Canadian Video Game Awards. You may recognize Bantog's name and Codex as the his BCIT school project was snapped up by Microsoft for Xbox last summer.

Bantog and Schroeder will continue their roles as Technical Director and Creative Director at ATA and will help develop new intellectual property to expand ATA's game portfolio.

This acquistion is a good news story for the Vancouver gaming community all around.

  • BCIT produces grads that are more than ready for the workforce - Bantog was part of the first graduating class in the BCIT games development degree program.
  • GGR's founders will continue to flourish as part of a larger team and access to ATA's growing resources.
  • ATA continues to innovate in building highly scalable online communities and is now positioning itself for growth in the content space by investing in new IP creation.
