Massachusetts-based Acquia closed an $8 Million series B funding round led by North Bridge Venture Partners and Sigma Partners today. Acquia is a commercial open source software company providing products, services, and technical support for the open source Drupal social publishing system.
Of course, Vancouver remains a Drupal hotbed with Raincity Studios, ImageX, Work at Play and Appnovation all Acquia partners.
VentureBeat reported today that Dries Buytaert - Drupal’s creator who now serves as Acquia’s CTO - says the funding will be used to accelerate the company’s existing support business, which is its primary source of revenue. The company also plans new products including scalable cloud hosting for bigger Drupal sites and Acquia Gardens, a software-as-a-service version of Drupal meant for smaller publishers and to compete head-on with the all-mighty WordPress.
