Air Canada comes to the iPhone

by Warren Frey | Technology

Air Canada recently rolled out an iPhone app that’s a first for the Canadian airline industry, enabling flyers to check in, monitor their flights, and check their Aeroplan points.

The app also features a Rent a Car feature, as well as access to all Air Canada messages.

While that’s all quite useful, the app does need some work. The various features work, but more often than not they seem to serve as a link to the Air Canada mobile website, rather than being baked into the app itself.

And the fact that this is app is a first for the Canadian airline industry says more about the sorry state of innovation and competition in our country than it does about the app itself. If we had more than two airlines to choose from, developers would have more of an incentive to create apps with more functions and tighter integration with hotel and travel sites. As is, the airline industry is much like have nowhere else to go, so you’d better like what you’re given by them.
