Montreal's Akoha unveiled a new iPhone App and site that promises to “add a little awesome to your life”.
The new Akoha is built on the basic premise that special little moments make life worth living. Akoha embraces this idea by offering hundreds of real-world missions, which are simple real world activities. These missions are meant to invite users to discover new experiences capture them, and share them with friends.
Techvibes readers may remember Akoha from their launch coverage at TechCrunch50 in 2008. The startup was distributing pay-it-forward style “mission cards” that friends pass to each other along with a mission. The idea was that Akoha players would socialize their missions, compete against friends and accumulate karma points along the way.
According to their press release today, the new and improved Akoha emerged from the lessons learned from the thousands of missions played in more than 65 countries since the company’s launch.
A key part of the new Akoha is a iPhone application that should make it fun and inspiring to capture the moment when completing missions, which can range from doing silly things with friends, exploring the world around you, or doing something positive for your community. Missions can range from sharing with a friend a treat at a café, taking a photo of a cool piece of street art, organizing an outdoor game with friends, doing something special for someone’s birthday, or making a small gift to a non-profit organization.
As Akoha players complete more missions, their accomplishments are recognized within the community with awards and tokens from Akoha and gifts from other players.
Akoha was founded by Austin Hill and Alex Eberts and in 2008 received $1.9 Million in funding from David Chamandy (co-founder, Lavalife), Ron Dembo (founder, Zerofootprint.net), film producer Jake Eberts (Chariots of Fire, Ghandi), and seed fund Montreal Start Up.
