Amazon Expands in Canada, Prepares to Open New Development Centre in Vancouver

Posted by Knowlton Thomas

Amazon is expanding in Canada.

“I am opening a new dev center in Vancouver in March if you know any devs or managers who would be interested in AWS EC2,” wrote Amazon engineering director Mai-lan Tomsen Bukovec on Facebook over the weekend, referring to Amazon Web Services Elastic Compute Cloud, one of the internet retailers cloud products.

According to a jobs page listing 10 positions for Amazon in Vancouver, the Canadian development centre "will initially focus on helping to develop tools and applications that enable all Amazon engineers to deliver the best, most scalable and efficient technologies."

The retailing giant hypes up the city on its website, noting Vancouver "consistently ranks as one of the cities with the best quality of living in the world," which suggests the company may be targeting outsiders willing to relocate as much as it's seeking Vancouverites. If true, it could mean Amazon hopes to make the Vancouver office a serious base for development in Canada, pulling in talent from across North America.

Amazon isn't the only company hiring in Vancouver, though. Check out the Techvibes Job Board for many more local opportunities in tech.
