American family data roams in Canada, returns home to $200,000 smartphone bill
Imagine opening up a cellphone bill with four digits.
Now five digits.
Now six digits.
A South Florida woman got the shock of her life when her latest cellphone bill clocked in at what is quite possibly a world record: $201,000.
The lady, identified a Celina Aarons, has two deaf and mute brothers. They went to Canada for two weeks and Celina didn't add international roaming to her plan. During their trip, her brothers sent over 2,000 texts (it's how they communicate primarily) and they also downloaded videos. The result? A big, big bill.
Celina called T-Mobile who deemed the charges correct based on her plan and the data consumed. She then went to the media with the story, at which point T-Mobile cut the bill down to $2,500—just over 1% of the original charge—and extended her payment time from the standard month to six months.
