Posted by Techvibes NewsDesk

As of today, Android is five years old.

It was on November 5 in 2007 that Google unveiled Android at the Open Handset Alliance. It took less than a year before manufacturers started launching consumer smartphones running the new mobile platform.

Now the Google Play Store has more than 700,000 apps and 1.3 million Android devices are activated every day. Over 500 million devices activated so far.

And while no single Android smartphone has come close to beating Apple's iPhone in single-device sales, Android has a whole now has greater marketshare in most major regions around the world—in many cases by a wide margin. Google chairman Eric Schmidt predicts that one billion Android devices will be activated by the end of next year.
