Today Apple said it has sold 4 million units of its brand new iPhone 4S model. Given that the smartphone has only been available since October 14th, this equals an average of over 1.3 million units sold—not just shipped—per day.

Apple took more than one million pre-orders, substantially eclipsing the iPhone 4's pre-sale demand of 600,000, which was already a record for smartphones.

These numbers also represent the company selling the gadget in only fraction of the world: the iPhone 4S plans to launch in 22 more countries by the end of the month and in over 70 countries total by the end of the year.
