Student Entrepreneurs Have Hours Left to Apply for Ottawa's Startup Garage

by Joseph Czikk

Ottawa-based student startup accelerator Startup Garage is telling applicants that they have until 4pm EST today to apply for the program.

The program is an initiative on behalf of the Ottawa Technology Transfer Network, a collaborative effort among academic research institutions affiliated with the University of Ottawa. The three-month summer program provides student-led ventures with cash, space, mentorship, formal training and other support. It operates through the University of Ottawa’s office of Technology Transfer and Business Enterprise (TTBE).

“Startup Garage offers students the opportunity to get their own business off the ground and become their own boss,” said Catherine Geci of the TTBE. “Is there any better way for students to jump-start their business?”

Current and recent graduates (within two years) of the University of Ottawa, Carleton University, Algonquin College and La Cité can apply for the program and students are strongly supported in building teams before they build their business. The program is also open to entrepreneurial students who have already started their venture, and who wish to accelerate the growth or expansion of their business.

The program boasts some impressive participants from past sessions including Inception Lab, Campus Tec,, Remay, Simple Task, Spoonity, Proximify and Sebertech.

Most recently, Startup Garage organized a January Tune-Up workshop in which 50 participants joined forces to form companies, either with the intention of pursuing a real business or simply to complete the workshop. Local mentors helped the companies discuss their ideas and come up with business plans while a mini- competition ended the event where participants had a chance to present their business.

The program compiled a great video detailing the Tune-Up session here:

Startup Garage is also putting on an Entrepreneurship Bridges Lecture on February 26 in which final pitches of the Wes Nichol Business Model Competition of the University of Ottawa will be presented.

Meanwhile for those student-lead businesses that wish to apply before 4pm, the Startup Garage team will let teams know of their decisions on March 7 2013.
