Social Media Day

UPDATE: Today is the day, folks! Happy Social Media Day to everyone!

Wednesday, June 30th: Social Media Day.

On this day, Twitterati, Facebookers, those of LinkedIn, Bebo, and more, will unite for the unofficially named day, celebrating the global glory of social media.

The day was founded by Mashable, and the tech news site has since organized hundreds of meetups in dozens of countries. But nobody made the day official - that is, until the capital of BC decided to take the first plunge.

Victoria Mayor Dean Fortin signed an official, legally binding proclamation after local Social Media Day meetup organizer Paul Holmes petitioned the Victoria City Council. This is the first city reported to actually proclaim June 30th as Social Media Day on an official basis.
