Best Buy unveils augmented reality 3-D hockey game with competition and prizes

Starting on March 18 (next Friday), hockey fans test out a new augmented reality, 3-D hockey game.

To play, you need a special game board, which can be picked up from any Best Buy location in B.C. and select stores in Quebec, or printed from home by visiting Best Buy's website.

Once you have your game board, all you need is your computer or laptop with a webcam or built-in camera to play. The camera picks up the game board and converts it into an interactive ice rink, where you move the game board around to control the puck (like air hockey) to score on a virtual goalie and accumulate as many goals as possible.

The game looks like it might have a steep learning curve and be prone to glitches (such as when the game board moves too far away or at too sharp an angle) but nonetheless, the concept of the game is cool and shows potential for more advanced versions later.

Players can post their high scores on Twitter and Facebook. The 10 best scores in B.C. will receive Canucks jerseys and the 10 best scores in Montreal will receive Canadiens jerseys. Plus, all B.C. players are automatically entered into a draw for a Sony 3D Home Theatre furnished by Best Buy and valued at $5,000. Quebec players will be entered to win a Samsung 3D Home Theater valued at $4,800.
