‘But honestly Monica…’ The magazine may be dead, but the internet meme lives on: 5 Shining Examples

Cooks Source is shuttered, as it should be. And while printing has ceased, and its website torn down, the Facebook Page – allegedly hacked following the crazy recent events – is now a place for the magazine’s own internet meme.

“But honestly Monica,” the now-famous introduction to the now-notorious email, has sparked a surge of parodies. Here is the original email, followed by some of our favourite parodies:

But honestly Monica, the web is considered ‘public domain’ and you should be happy we just didn’t ‘lift’ your whole article and put someone else’s name on it! It happens a lot, clearly more than you are aware of, especially on college campuses, and the workplace. If you took offence and are unhappy, I am sorry, but you as a professional should know that the article we used written by you was in very bad need of editing, and is much better now than was originally. Now it will work well for your portfolio. For that reason, I have a bit of a difficult time with your requests for monetary gain, albeit for such a fine (and very wealthy!) institution. We put some time into rewrites, you should compensate me! I never charge young writers for advice or rewriting poorly written pieces, and have many who write for me… ALWAYS for free!

But honestly Monica…

  1. “But honestly, Monica, I have your car. You parked it in a public place where I found it – just standing there. You didn’t look after it very well – I had to change the transmission. You owe me $650.00.” – Brian Tristam Williams
  2. “But honestly Monica, you might now find yourself published in Judith’s new magazine, Cheese and Hackers.” – Darrin English. With the lovely addition by Marjorie McAtee, “You’ll need a top quality whine to go with that.”
  3. “But honestly Monica, I copy articals becaus its just so hard to edit words that I right myself.” – Edwin Jiang
  4. “But honestly Monica, i burnt down your house, raped your children and cut of your husband’s manhood, but you should be grateful that I didn’t murder you.” – Mikey Cee
  5.  And finally, while not a meme, an excellent closer by Erin Simpson: “I heard Judith sold Cooks Source Magazine and started a new one. It will be called Cooks Source Magazine.”
