Over the past weekend both Calgary and Montreal hosted Startup Weekend.

A game about fighting chickens won in Calgary and a mobile app that helps patients find health care services took top spot in Montreal.

Mobile game Kawk Fighter claimed first place with a perfectly practiced pitch that had the audience laughing while demonstrating meticulous research and a sound business model. The Kawk Fighter team managed to assemble a video trailer (check it out) and convince the judges that the game has the potential to be a top seller in the Apple App Store.

Mobile App Im-Patient beat out 15 other businesses that were launched during the 54-hour intensive session in Montreal. Im-Patient will allow patients to bypass hospital emergency rooms by finding clinics available in their area, using the location services on a user’s mobile phone or tablet. If patients must visit an emergency room, the program uses daily updated data published by the Quebec government to estimate the wait times for nearby hospitals.
