Calgary's Minigroup adds new features, leaves beta phase
Calgary-based Minigroup this week launched in full. Improvements to the site since the beta release make it easier for members to share any kind of file, create and manage multiple groups, and find files faster. In addition, Minigroup Pro accounts are available for purchase, providing 1GB file uploads, 10GB of storage, enhanced file management, music playlists, and the ability to control who may post to a group.
The site remains free to join and has no advertising. Pro accounts are offered at $10 per month or $100 per year.
“Minigroupʼs ease of use and privacy make it ideal for corporate or client use,” says Jon Parker, Brand Director of Minigroup. “The new storage and file management features of our Pro accounts provide a simple way to share files within companies or with external clients. Unlike folder-based cloud storage solutions, Minigroup integrates file sharing into an intuitive social-network style post-and-comment system.”
Other new features of the site include the ability to attach files to comments, hashtag posts, better image posting and slideshows, and Gmail invitations. The new files tab for Pro accounts allows users to find files by type, name, or date, and to browse every image shared with their groups. Users can play MP3s posted to their groups as a playlist.
Unlike Google+ Circles or Facebook friend lists, groups on Minigroup are truly collaborative and mutually agreed-upon collaborative spaces:
Unlike these social networks, everything is private by default, and youʼre always in control. Your presence and activities on Minigroup are completely hidden from search engines, strangers, and “friends of friends”. Within Minigroup, people can only see groups in which they are members. Youʼre never prompted to “reconnect with people” or “expand your network."
