Canada Post's new collection: If you thought a BlackBerry was an outdated item, try a BlackBerry stamp
Canada Post has released a new collection of stamps showcasing Canadian inventions—the pacemaker, the electric oven, the eletcric wheelchair, and the BlackBerry.
RIM has accomplished a lot in its time and will forever be an icon of Canadian innovation and success. But right now, it's the butt of jokes in the mobile space, and a device largely considered "outdated" becoming a stamp—even more outdated a thing, most would say—is simply funny.
What Canada Post says of Waterloo-born Research In Motion:
While smart phones and other communications devices, as well as technologies such as push email and mobile apps, are commonplace now, they were nearly the stuff of science fiction in 1999, when Research in Motion (RIM) founders Mike Lazaridis and Jim Balsillie introduced the now iconic BlackBerry®. Their invention freed information workers from their desks and changed the way the world communicates. Subsequent versions and continuous innovation have kept RIM and its BlackBerry device a front runner in the massive smart phone market.
Mostly true, slightly debatable toward the end. Still, let's not forget RIM was a genuine pioneer in the space. The question is, when you become a stamp these days, is it an honour or an insult?
