Tech Venture Capitalist John Ruffolo Named Canada's Most Powerful Businessperson in 2014

Canadian Business released its 2014 list of the nation's most powerful businesspeople.

On top is John Ruffolo, the CEO of Omers Ventures, the most active venture capital firm in Canada's tech sector.

"Ruffolo presides over a $200-million fund that’s offering big money to startups," writes Canadian Business. "The pension fund’s role in a record-breaking US$165-million deal to finance Vancouver-based social media platform Hootsuite and a $100-million deal with Ottawa-based e-commerce platform Shopify establishes it as a heavyweight player on par with U.S.-based VCs."

Other notables in the top 10 include Prem Watsa, one of BlackBerry's biggest shareholders; John Chen, the new head of BlackBerry; and Jean-Pierre Blais, who "wields enormous influence over the regulations that govern a $100-billion industry in the midst of unprecedented digital upheaval" as chairman of the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission.
