Canadians exchange over 3,000 text messages per second

New research from Pew Research Center highlights the growing trend of choosing texting over talking, reinforced by Telus numbers for a Canadian parallel.

The U.S. survey found nearly 1 in 3 Americans prefer texting to talking, with half still preferring voice communication. These numbers are up dramatically from just a few years ago, when voice dominated and texting was a niche form of communication among early-adopting thumb warriors.

The trend appears similar in Canada. Telus communications manager Shawn Hall reported that Canadians exchange 8,000,000,000 texts per month—that equates to more than 3,000 every second, around the clock.

Shawn also revealed that 42% of Telus customers use smartphones, a number that was 25% just one year prior, and nearly two-thirds of new customers are getting smartphones, up from just one-third in 2010. Think about that. And maybe text it to one—or a thousand—of your friends.
