Carleton University and public safety and emergency management solutions firm AMITA have teamed up to bring high-tech safety measures to the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics.
Carleton's Human Oriented Technology Lab and AMITA will be providing a casualty tracking system which will allow health care providers and emergency co-ordinators to quickly exchange data, giving hospitals a heads-up on what types are injuries will be arriving in the event of an emergency.
According to the press release, the system will also give decision makers real-time data on the size and scope of the emergency.
“The benefits of the system will be felt downstream by our patients, paramedics, dispatchers and first receivers. The real-time communication technology and support will improve patient care," said says Rene Bernklau, Provincial
Co-ordinator of Hazardous Substance Response for the CBRNE Team Emergency Management Office of the British Columbia Ambulance Service in the release.
A second system built through the joint effort, SOCIUS, is already in use by the RCMP.
SOCIUS provides highly technical overviews of incidents of terrorists and criminals using Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) and makes sharing the information between various agencies simpler.
Both systems will be in use at the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics and 2010 Paralympic games.
