City of Ottawa to launch app competition in September

It's been discussed for a while, but it seems from this article in The Ottawa Citizen, The City of Ottawa's municipal app competition will be a go this fall.

In May, the City of Ottawa voted to adopt an "open data," policy, making municipal data open to the public so that it could be mashed up by developers into applications.

So far a variety of apps have been developed using municipal data like Eat Safe Ottawa Edition, which allows iPhone users to quickly check a restaurant's latest health inspection results.

If all goes well, the developers hacking away on municipal applications will be eligible for $50,000 worth of prizes this September when the contest is expected to launch.
