City of Toronto Responds to Hackers: 'We Will Take Appropriate Measures' #OccupyToronto [UPDATED]

The City of Toronto has acknowledged a threat from hacker group Anonymous.

Anonymous this week threatened to have the City of Toronto "removed from the internet" should the city decide to evict the Occupy Toronto campers.

Mayor Rob Ford wants the campers to vamoose, but might tread a little more carefully with hackers watching his every move. City spokeswoman Margaret Dougherty has stated that the City of Toronto is "taking all threats seriously and will be taking appropriate measures." However, she would not elaborate on her vague wording.

Rob, meanwhile, said that his IT department "feel very confident" that the city's website is secure—so we'll see how secure their jobs are should Anonymous successful strike with its traditional distributed denial of service attack. The mayor insists that, regardless of the hacker's threat, the Occupy camp will still be evicted soon.

"I can't condone illegal behaviour," he told The Province firmly.

UPDATE: The City of Toronto has officially requested that Occupy Toronto leave St. James Park.

Quoth BlogTO:

Toronto by-law officers are currently issuing eviction notices to protesters, many of which are being attached to tents.

There are reports that the protesters are being asked to leave the park immediately, but the scene at the park is quite calm right now. Police are on hand, but Constable Wendy Drummond claims their presence is only to ensure that by-law officers can safely carry out the distribution of the notices.
