Driven by iPad, Tablets Growing 10X Faster Than Laptops

Netbook and laptop shipments increased by 12% in the first quarter of 2012, according to the NPD Group.

Meanwhile, tablet shipments skyrocketed 124%—more than 10 times the growth of laptop shipments.

Total mobile PC shipments hit 76 million units in the quarter, with Apple accounting for more than 22% of that share, driven primarily by over 13 million iPad shipments. iPad shipments are up a remarkable 162% from last year, the NPD Group says, while overall mobile PC shipments climbed 118%.

Apple's iPad still holds more than 62% of the market, with Samsung in a distant second holding just over 7%. Canadian-born Research In Motion's BlackBerry PlayBook is stuck in neutral, holding barely 2% of marketshare.
