EA picks up Bioware for close to a billion

Games giant Electronic Arts, which maintains two facilities in Vancouver, announced they will acquire Edmonton-based Bioware, along with fellow studio Pandemic, to the tune of $860 million. Bioware's pedigree includes hit titles such as Neverwinter Nights, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, and the hotly anticipated Mass Effect.  But the buzz at GigaOm, tech journalist Om Malik's site, indicates EA may have snapped up Bioware less for its established titles and more for upcoming Wii and Nintendo DS titles. Time will tell, and it remains to be seen if the purchase means a move for Bioware or any repercussions for staff at EA Vancouver.
