The Winnipeg Free Press reported yesterday that EDS Canada is spending $18 million to establish an information technology service centre in Winnipeg that could produce up to 1,000 new jobs over the next five years.
The global IT industry leader -- EDS generates about $20 billion in annual revenue -- is refurbishing a 100,000-square-foot Inkster Industrial Park building whose former tenants have also been in the IT sector. EDS already has about 300 employees in the province. The Texas-based company is a major supplier of IT services to the province.
The company is also in the final stages of completing negotiations for a substantial outsourcing contract of administrative services with the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority.
Among other things, the service centre will provide technical support for clients dealing with a full range of computer hardware and software issues, back-office customer support for financial industry clients and outsourced human resource administrative work.
EDS officials say the new service centre will not be supporting clients from Manitoba at this time. The company estimates that the new centre will contribute about $440 million to the provincial GDP over the next 10 years.
