There's been a ton of hype surrounding BlackBerry 10 this month. Most people seem to be pretty impressed by it. But everyone knows of one major weakness: an app ecosystem that pales in comparison to Apple's App Store and Google's Play Store.
Well, it sure doesn't help to learn that Facebook has no plans to build or release an Instagram app for BB10, according to a source cited in VentureBeat. Considering Instagram's huge popularity in key BlackBerry markets such as the US, this is a brutal blow to the Canadian company.
There's still a chance that Facebook is building a native version of Instagram. But no one can confirm that.
On the bright side, RIM claims that BB10 devices will have amazing cameras with incredible software to back them up, including a native photo editor with plenty of cool filters. Still, when a regular person hears "BlackBerry doesn't even have Instagram," he or she may just go, "wow, what a lame platform." Foolish, of course, but most consumers do base their smartphone purchases off trivial matters such as these.
Maybe if BB10 rocks our world—and so far, it looks like it just may—Facebook will consider neglecting the operating system.
UPDATE: CrackBerry writer Kevin Michaluk insists VB is wrong on this one.
"No offense to VentureBeat, but whatever sources they have that are familiar with the matter, I have better sources that are even more familiar with this matter," he writes confidently. "I checked in with my contacts that all but gave formal confirmation that … you will see Instagram come to BlackBerry 10."
