As of Today, Facebook is Officially 10 Years Old

Today marks Facebook’s 10th anniversary.

Originally known as "The Facebook," the site went live on February 4, 2004 in Mark Zuckerberg's Harvard University dorm room. Today it is the world's largest social network with more than 1.2 billion active users.

“It's been an incredible journey so far, and I'm so grateful to be a part of it," said Zuckerberg, who has remained the company's CEO as it grew from a college hobby project to a global public company world $140 billion. "It's been amazing to see how people have used Facebook to build a real community and help each other in so many ways."

By the end of 2004, Facebook had one million users. In 2010, it reached 500 million. By by the end of 2012, it cracked a billion.

"In the next decade, we have the opportunity and responsibility to connect everyone and to keep serving the community as best we can," he added.

Everyday, people click a "Like" button six billion times. These people have posted 400 billion photos on the site and sent 7.8 trillion messages.

Facebook, which now boasts well over 6,000 employees, has launched A Look Back, an experience that enables people on Facebook to see a personalized movie or collection of photos with their biggest moments since they joined Facebook.
