Facebook Turns Messenger App into Platform with Plans for Entire Ecosystem Built-In

Facebook Messenger is evolving.

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg took the stage at developer conference F8 to announce Messenger is no longer just an app; it’s now a platform on which third-parties can build on.

Some examples: users will be able to create content within the app and users will be able to track e-commerce shipping and communicate with businesses within the app. Already the app is expected to integrate with more than 40 niche apps, with more to come.

Eventually, Zuckerberg says, Messenger—with more than 600 million active users, or nearly half of all active Facebook users—will become an entire ecosystem.

This new, fully featured Messenger is expected to launch within a few weeks.
