fanwavesToronto-based start-up Assetize recently assisted Octagon Digital to help them launch FanWaves, a Twitter advertising network developed exclusively for the sports entertainment industry.

According to a press release published by Octagon, FanWaves allows individuals and brands using Twitter to generate revenue by posting sponsor messages (click to see an example) on the destination pages that they link to in their tweets.

Jim DeLorenzo is the Vice President of Octagon Digital:

FanWaves represents another step that Octagon Digital is taking to develop innovative products and platforms for the sports world.  This one-of-a-kind advertising network successfully monetizes Twitter in a way that preserves the important bond between leagues, teams, and athletes, and the fans who passionately follow them on Twitter.

One of Octagon's early clients is the Phoenix Suns of the NBA.  Jeramie McPeek is the Vice President of Digital for the Suns:

Our fans view Twitter as a tool to connect with the team and our players on a more personal level.  We did not want to threaten that relationship through in-stream advertising, yet we were seeking a way to use Twitter as a tool for our sponsors. FanWaves provides the perfect solution to our need.

What are your thoughts on this?  Is this model something that Twitter itself will use to further monetize it's business?
