Student-run Venture Fund FounderProject Names Winner of Startup Competition

Canadian student-run venture fund FounderProject this week named Stori the winner of its build-a-startup competition today.

Events were held across Montreal, Toronto, and Waterloo since the middle of October, during which time hundreds of student entrepreneurs attended the events and more than 120 student startups applied to the competition.

Applicants were judged based off the strength of the team, vision, opportunity, and progress made from the beginning of the competition. FounderProject named Stori the winner. Stori claims to be the first platform where you can build and share real-time stories.

“After considering feedback from the community, and voting as a team, FounderProject is pleased to name Stori the top student startup,” said Ilan Saks, the founder of FounderProject. “There were lots of great applicants, but it ultimately came down to the strength of Stori’s team, and their strong vision.”

At the events, student entrepreneurs got the opportunity to receive feedback from mentors at investment firms like Omers Ventures and Real Ventures, accelerators like FounderFuel and Communitech HyperDrive, and companies like Google. High-profile keynote speakers spoke at the events, including Dick Costolo, the CEO of Twitter, and John Ruffolo, the CEO of Omers.

The final four startups were Aptus of Waterloo University, Interactive Punching Bag of Waterloo University, GoAirly of Concordia University, and Stori of McGill University.

“Imagine first-person live-tracked stories from journalists in war zones like Syria, or first-person stories from protestors in Istanbul,” explains David Cameron, one of the co-founders of Stori. “Think of following your friend in Rio in real-time: blurring the lines between your life and theirs. From entertainment to journalism to human sharing, Stori is out to change how we interact on a fundamental level.”

FounderProject’s last competition winner was Outpost, which now claims to be the world’s largest peer to peer travel aggregator and has raised $200,000 in seed capital.
