Four months in the works - Amazon acquires AbeBooks

Posted by Rob Lewis on Mon, December 1, 2008 2:41 PM · Filed under Seattle, Vancouver, Victoria , Venture Capital, Success Stories · 4 Comments

Four months to the day of their acquisition annoucement, Seattle's Amazon.com announced today the completion of its acquisition of AbeBooks.

AbeBooks is an online marketplace for books, with over 110 million primarily used, rare and out-of-print books listed for sale by thousands of independent booksellers from around the world. A true Internet success story, AbeBooks.com has been selling books online since 1996, and is a private company based in Victoria, with affiliates in Germany and the United States. Internet Retailer magazine ranked AbeBooks at No. 73 among North American online retailers in June 2008.

Amazon.com had previously announced that it had reached an agreement to acquire AbeBooks on August 1, 2008 and our coverage elicited plenty of comments.

AbeBooks will continue to function as a stand-alone operation based in Victoria.

Huge congratulations to Boris and everyone else at Abe Books for closing this deal. This must be one of the biggest Canadian private company success stories in the web space?

Looks like it's probably the 2nd biggest acquisition in the Canadian consumer Internet space - behind Disney’s acquisition of Club Penguin ($700 Million) and ahead of Yahoo!’s purchase of Flickr ($35 Million).
