Greatest Entrepreneur: Steve Jobs Tops List That Includes Bill Gates, Jeff Bezos, and Mark Zuckerberg

by Knowlton Thomas | Apple

The late Steve Jobs topped Fortune's recent list of "greatest entrepreneurs of our time." The Apple cofounder, famous for his theatrically mercurial personality and creative genius, was first on a list dominated by modern tech legends.

Steve ranked ahead of some of our era's most notable tech entrepreneurs, including Microsoft's Bill Gates, Google's Larry Page and Sergey Brin, and Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg. As Fortune put it, "though he could be abusive and mean-spirited … Steve Jobs has been our generation's quintessential entrepreneur," describing him as an "inspiring" and "brilliant" visionary.

Fittingly enough, on the day Jobs launched the Macintosh, a reporter from Popular Science asked him what type of studies Apple had conducted to ensure there was a market for the computer. In a nearly offended tone, Jobs retorted, "Did Alexander Graham Bell do any market research before he invented the telephone?"
