Green Gifts Facebook App mixes sustainability and frivolity

Posted by Warren Frey on Tue, October 23, 2007 7:51 PM · Filed under Vancouver , Events , Facebook · 1 Comment

Rob Cottingham of Social Signal demoed a new Facebook app called Green Gifts at the recent Facebook Developer's Garage. He said the app, which is part of BC Hydro's sustainability awareness program, is less about innovation and more about co-opting the obvious energy around virtual gift giving to spread the word. Cottingham said "if you build it, they will come" generally doesn't work in the social space, and instead going to the Facebook platform was a natural way to spread BC Hydro's message to a heavily engaged audience already predisposed to communicate with one another. The app went live on October 17th, and new icons, gifts and sustainability tips will continue to be rolled out in the near future.
