Happy Earth Day from Userful Corporation

by Victoria Revay

How are you celebrating Earth Day?  How about downloading software from Userful and making your computer–sort of a multiple of computers?  The Calgary-based company is giving away a 2 free versions of its software that turns one computer into up to ten. Describing their software as an environmentally efficient alternative to traditional desktop computing, up to 10 users can work on a single computer by simply attaching extra monitors, mice and keyboards once they download the software. Their goal today is to have 100,000 people doing just that.

In 2008 Userful's PC-sharing software saved over 40,000 tons of CO2 emissions, and is on track to save over 200,000 tons of CO2 in 2009, the equivalent of taking more than 35,000 cars off the road, or planting 50,000 acres of trees!

So how does the software work?  Well as you all know, desktop computers sit idle while we check our e-mail, surf the web, or type a document. Userful's desktop virtualization technology leverages this power. The company's President Timothy Griffin says simple changes, like participating in events like Earth Hour or downloading their software today can reduce electricity and e-waste savings.  So if you want to see how you can save some money, reduce e-waste and CO2 emissions, check out the site and download the software.
