HP Says WebOS Will Be Open Source This Fall; Rolls Out Developer Tools in Advance

HP is officially making webOS an open-source platform. The computer company has announced that webOS—last seen on the now-defunct TouchPad tablet—will be open source by this autumn.

“HP is bringing the innovation of the webOS platform to the open source community,” said Bill Veghte, executive vice president and chief strategy officer, HP. “This is a decisive step toward meeting our goal of accelerating the platform’s development and ensuring that its benefits will be delivered to the entire ecosystem of web applications.”

We can expect to see webOS developer tools slowly roll out between now and then, giving developers a head start on working with the operating system. HP hopes to enable the creation of single applications that function seamlessly cross-platform with Enyo 2.0.
