I'll take 300 minutes and a Big Gulp, please: Mobilicity to sell phones at 7-Eleven
According to the CBC, Mobilicity has partnered with 7-Eleven to sell their cell phones in almost 150 convenience stores in Vancouver, Edmonton and Toronto.
Though the company would only say the move will come "later this year" — though in time for the holidays — it plans to offer phones without a contract or credit check at almost 150 7-Eleven stores in Toronto, Vancouver and Edmonton.
"Being able to buy Mobilicity's unlimited wireless, day or night at 7-Eleven, will only add to that convenient customer experience," said Doug Perry, Mobilicity's vice-president of sales in Toronto, in a release.
Well, if Mobilicity’s aiming for convenience, I guess it doesn’t get much more convenient than 7-Eleven. The only problem I can see with this is that 7-Eleven clerks are hardly trained to be trouble shooters for phones; you’d have to go to a Mobilicity store or an electronics store for that, and I’m not even sure if a place like Future Shop would do any sort of tech support or servicing in-store unless your device was purchased there.
Selling phones at grocery and convenience stores is hardly a new thing, as the CBC article mentions; heck Petro-Can even has their own pre-paid cell phone service at their gas stations.
And, if you ever want to compare cell phone prices, you can get a Slurpee while you’re at it. How cool is that?
