Txt.ca has released its quarterly report of text messages in Canada. In the third quarter of 2011, Canadians sent 19.5 billion text messages to one another, with 6.7 billion of those occurring in September. Well over 200 million text messages are exchanged each day, which equates to more than 2,500 texts per second.

In 2009, Canadians sent 35.5 billion texts. In 2010, this number climbed 60% to 56.4 billion. In 2011, this number is expected to reach 80 billion. Despite the rising popularity of smartphones, which enable mobile email, and social networks, a highly accessible form of communication, Canadians still seem to prefer texting for most occasions.
