The rumour mill triggered a surge in Adobe's stock today, rising by 11.5 percent following media speculation that Microsoft may acquire it. Quoth The Globe:

The New York Times reported that Microsoft chief executive officer Steve Ballmer had met secretly with Adobe CEO Shantanu Narayen at Adobe’s San Francisco offices “recently”.

The two discussed Apple Inc.’s dominance in mobile phones and considered several options to counteract that, including Microsoft acquiring Adobe, the newspaper reported, citing employees and consultants involved in the discussions.

Adobe and Microsoft declined comment.

The deal is estimated at more than $15 billion and could give Microsoft an edge over Apple, who has become estranged from Adobe's Flash product.
