Lenovo Says BlackBerry Acquisition Possible, Not Likely

Lenovo admits it has considered bidding to buy BlackBerry. But it says it has bigger fish to fry.

The company, which has made five acquisitions over the last eight years, says BlackBerry is not high on its list of priorities.

Aymar de Lencquesaing, Lenovo’s president of North American operations, told BNN that buying BlackBerry would diversify it away from smartphones and bulk up its enterprise business—directions the company isn’t necessarily interested in going right now.

Lenovo last year acquired IBM’s server unit and Motorola.

Interestingly, though, despite the Canadian government hinting it probably wouldn’t allow a China-based company to take over BlackBerry in full, Lenovo believes national security concerns would not be an issue.

In other news, BlackBerry is preparing to further embrace Google’s mobile operating system. The struggling smartphone maker is looking to launch a device that runs natively on Android, and analysts think it’s not a half-bad idea.
