Lighthouse Labs to Host First-ever HTML500 in Vancouver This February

by Techvibes NewsDesk

On February 1, Vancouver-based developer bootcamp Lighthouse Labs is hosting "the HTML500," which it claims is the largest one-day open access education event in Vancouver, and one of the largest in Canadian history.

The HTML500 will invite 500 people with no coding experience to spend a day learning HTML and CSS for free.

According to Lighthouse, the goals of HTML500 are to raise awareness of the strength and size of the local technology community, and bring to light the career opportunities available in the sector.

The Canadian tech industry is creating global companies, but the demand for talent far outstrips the supply. With a top 10 global startup ecosystem and geographical proximity to other major west coast hubs, Vancouver’s technology industry is poised for explosive growth. The BC Innovation Council (BCIC), Telus and Hootsuite, along with 47 other tech-focused companies, have partnered with Lighthouse Labs and the HTML500 in order to help demonstrate the community’s commitment to building a global technology hub in Vancouver.

“The HTML500 is the first step towards advanced tech education for the general public,” explains Jeremy Shaki, event organizer and cofounder at Lighthouse Labs. “It is imperative that we show them, especially students, the advantages and ease of learning to code, regardless of the industry they are part of. As software development is instituted in standard curriculums in elementary and secondary schools, this generation of students will need to understand how to code to keep up with the new demands of the workforce.”

The HTML500 will be taking place at Rocky Mountaineer Station from 10am-5:30pm.
