In August, it was revealed that Groupon vouchers are technically illegal throughout Canada and in some states in America.
Of course, dozens of would-be competitors have since followed in Groupon's footsteps, closely mimicking the company's terms and conditions—for the worse. Groupon, though, being the first, the biggest, and the fastest growing, has the most at risk and is the one feeling the burn of the hottest flame. [Video after jump]
Recently, a legal panel came together for Daily Deal Media to discuss the legal controversies of the group buying business models. Below, a video of Boyan Josic, Jay Edelson, Gianna Scatchell, David S. Almeida discussing Groupon et al sees Groupon described as a company who was so focused on growing marketshare that legal aspects were never really on its radar. Now a multi-billion dollar company, it must face the hard reality that it is not immune to provincial and federal laws.
