Microsoft says Android is 'chaotic' and iOS 5 missed the mark but for Windows the 'stars are lining up'

Andy Lees, president of Microsoft's Windows Phone division, told the Seattle Times his thoughts on mobile competitors. His comments are both surprising and anything but.

Andy believes that the iPhone 4S was a missed opportunity hardware wise and that iOS 5 isn't any better than Windows Phone 7.5 (Mango). He also described Android as "heading down [a] chaotic phase." He said that some Android phones are great, "but some of them are not great." It's a case of too many cooks in the kitchen, according to Andy.

His optimism continues when touting the future prospects of the Windows Phone, which hasn't been selling and is partners with a sharply declining phone maker, Nokia. Andy says that the Xbox will be updated in November with an updated user interface similar to Windows 8, which is in the works. He also says the choice of hardware will be an "accelerant." Over the next 1 to 2 years, Andy can see "a lot of stars lining up" for the mobile platform. 

It's pretty bold for Microsoft to be dissing Google and Apple's mobile efforts, but at the same time, they've got to hype their own business somehow.
