More Stanley Cup rioters added to police website as evidence stacks up to equivalent of 45,000 CDs
24 more suspects in Vancouver's Stanley Cup riots this past summer have been added to the Vancouver Police Department's dedicated website for hunting them down.
Les Yeo of the VPD came forth to say that it could take up "two years to fully investigate"—a notion that will anger many of those impatient with the police department's slow justice on the matter.
But the police perhaps have a very real reason for the lack of speed: the staggering amount of evidence before them that must be processed and considered.
Thus far, more than 30 terabytes of data has been processed as evidence, the equivalent of roughly 7,500 DVDs or 45,000 CDs. There's plenty of evidence to charge folks with, the police say, and they want to use it all so that they might present as strong a case as possible to the courts and ensure due punishment. With sufficient evidence, multiple charges can be laid against each individual, increasing the chances of jailtime.
Then again, this is Canada, so I'm not certain that due punishment is possible.
Les Yeo says that up to 700 rioters will ultimately be charged and still encourages the public to submit tips and evidence to the department's website as the investigation continues.
