New electronic recycling facility opens in Edmonton

geep Edmonton is now among a small number of cities in North America that have electronic waste processing plants. Yesterday was the official opening of a new E-waste facility located at the Waste Management Centre in northeast Edmonton.

“Our plan is to use the Edmonton facility as our headquarters for western Canada and so we try to feed this machinery from the provinces on each side, from B.C. and from Saskatchewan and so on,” said Alfred Hambsch, president of Global Electric and Electronic Processing (GEEP), the company that built the plant.

Electronics that find their way to the plant will be broken down into raw materials, such as copper and plastic, and then sold for other uses. The $10 million facility will help to keep 30,000 tonnes of electronics from ending up in landfills.

That is, of course, only if Edmontonians continue to take their electronics to eco-stations. You can find locations, hours of operation, and other information about Edmonton’s eco-stations here.
