It was 4 years after the original Xbox launched that Microsoft released the Xbox 360 back in 2005.
Now 6 years later, it looks like gamers will have to wait another 2-plus years before they get experience the company's next-gen console.
A report by Develop suggests that, based on information sourced from chip manufacturers and software firms, the next Xbox will be announced at E3 in 2013 and a subequent launch before the end of that year.
Nintendo has plans to launch a new Wii, the "Wii U," in 2012, well ahead of Microsoft's release. However, Microsoft's more direct competitor is Sony with its PlayStation console series, and Sony doesn't appear to have any immediate plans for a major update. Of course, they could just be keeping it a secret, Apple-style.
