Senior Editor Leaves New York Times for Mashable

A prominent editor at one of the world's most well-know traditional newspapers has taken up residence at a digital media property.

Jonathan Ellis, a senior editor of the New York Times, has joined online news site Mashable as managing editor.

In his new role at Mashable, Ellis will oversee the daily news report and manage Mashable’s team of news editors and work closely with technology and product in developing new tools and ways of reaching and interacting with the company's audience, as well as play a role in developing new editorial initiatives, starting with Mashable’s recently announced plans to build out travel coverage.

At the Times, Ellis was most recently senior editor for digital platforms, leading a team of newsroom editors who helped tailor the newspaper's mobile products and news report. He also worked to develop the company’s mobile strategy.

“Jonathan’s keen news sensibility combined with experience in building and experimenting with interactive storytelling techniques will be a huge asset as we aggressively grow all that Mashable has to offer our community,” said Jim Roberts, Chief Content Officer and Executive Editor of Mashable. “Jonathan’s experience across news and platforms makes him exactly the talent that is core to Mashable’s growing newsroom.”

Mashable is a much different beast than the New York Times. While one is deeply rooted in traditional journalism and has for several decades retained its award-winning, long-form integrity, Mashable has gradually transitoned in recent years from a tech news blog into a broader online host of various article types, similar to Buzzfeed's seemingly random—but wildly popular—mix of content aimed at internet timesinkers.
