Nitobi Survey Shows Open Web Majority

Posted by Greg Andrews on Wed, March 26, 2008 2:48 PM · Filed under Vancouver , Events , Web Development · 1 Comment

Nitobi have released the results of an online survey of web developers on the technologies and tools that they use (done with help from Darren Barefoot). The interesting aspect is that there's no one dominant language or platform. What does dominate the survey is open source, which comprises 80% of the platform responses, 84% of the Ajax framework responses, and 59% of the development tools responses. With the tools, Dreamweaver remains popular among designers, but a quarter of the responses were simple text editors. When asked what causes the most pain in web development, the first answer was overwelmingly "browser compatibility", followed by "testing".

These results, showing the diverse nature of open source web development, are timely with the volunteer-run Open Web Vancouver Conference coming up in less than three weeks. Techvibes is now an official media sponsor of Open Web, and we'll be there posting from the event. The schedule is set with three full tracks of sessions over two days, spanning a diverse range of topics around open source web development. There's still room, with no shortage of space in the Vancouver Convention and Exhibition Centre, and registration is only $150.

Open Source Rules Nitobi Survey–Not a platform of choice though said on Thu, March 27, 2008 at 7:46 PM

[...] Darren Barefoot and Vancouver-based Nitobi posted a survey recently asking developers about their choices of development platforms.  While there wasn’t an overwhelming platform of choice, open-source tools ruled the day: The interesting aspect is that there’s no one dominant language or platform.
