Nokia Unveils Smartphone with 41-Megapixel Camera

Nokia this morning unveiled a smartphone with a 41-megapixel camera.

The camera boasts more than five times the megapixels of the iPhone 5, and more than three times the megapixels of the Samsung Galaxy S4. The camera is also equipped with several powerful features, inclding high quality zoom and optical image stabilization.

The Nokia Lumia 1020's camera also uses a new feature called dual capture, which simultaneously takes a high resolution 38-megapixel image for endless editing opportunities, and creates a five-megapixel picture that is easy to share.

The Nokia Lumia 1020's 41 megapixel sensor features leading ZEISS optics with six physical lenses, plus optical image stabilization, delivering crystal clear pictures even in low light conditions. It also captures blur free videos with stereo sound even at the loudest concerts thanks to Nokia Rich Recording, which handles sound pressure levels six times louder than conventional smartphone microphones.

"We want to take people on a journey from capturing pictures to recording and sharing their lives," said Stephen Elop, CEO of Nokia. "The Nokia Lumia 1020 will bring new meaning to pictures and continues to strengthen Nokia's leadership in imaging."

“At a time when macro-level innovation has seemed to be lacking in smartphones—due to the homogeneity of smartphone operating systems and the drive to appeal to the mass market—Nokia’s Lumia 1020 demonstrates that there is still considerable scope to drive forward the user experience in core smartphone capabilities," says Tony Cripps, Principal device analyst at Ovum. "This is evidenced not only in the Lumia 1020’s imaging prowess but also in its audio abilities, the company’s Rich Recording technology similarly transforms the Lumia 1020’s audio recording."

The Nokia Lumia 928's eight-megapixel camera was supposed to lead all smartphones in terms of camera quality when it was released last year, but disappointed many critics. Nokia's smartphone sales plunged nearly 50% last quarter.

The 1020 is slated to launch in the US on July 26, followed by China and European markets in the next couple of months. No word on a Canadian release yet.
